How To Copyright Your Music Step By Step

This video will show you how to copyright a song or an album step by step in the United States using copyright.gov.

IMPORTANT: To save money, I recommend you copyright your entire album or EP at once, not one song at a time. They charge a flat rate for each submission. Meaning, it doesn't matter if it's one song or 100. The price is $55.00.

Here are the steps covered in the video:

00:11 Go to eco.copyright.gov and sign in or create an account.

00:15 Click register a new claim and answer 3 yes or no questions

00:48 Click "Start Registration" select type of work as "Sound recording"

00:53 Enter the title of your album

01:07 Enter the name of each song on your album

01:30 Enter Publication information

01:55 Enter the info to credit the Author(s) of the music

02:17 Enter the info for the Claimant(s) of the music (owns the rights to the music)

02:35 Enter Limitation of Claim info

02:45 Enter Rights and Permissions info

02:57 Enter Correspondent info (the person the copyright office will contact with any questions about your application)

03:19 Enter the Mail Certificate info (the name and address you want the copyright office to mail the copyright certificate to)

03:30 Enter Special Handling info

03:34 Enter Certification info (certifying yourself as the owner, author, and claimant of the music)

03:43 Review your submission (make sure all the info is correct) and click "Add to Cart"

04:03 Click "Check Out", pick your payment method, and then click "ok" to proceed to checkout.

04:15 Enter your payment information and process your payment

04:23 Upload your files (upload your songs—yes, you have to pay first)

04:43 Click green box to confirm your files and finalize the upload and finish your order

That's it. Your music is now copyrighted. You should receive your copyright certificate in 6-8 months.
